geist cool activeair

Maximize rack and room density to achieve best-in-class PUE by stabilizing intake air temperature, all while collecting intelligent feedback.

The Geist Cool containment system centers on two critical components:

  1. Containing heat by using Geist’s manufactured chimneys and enclosures
  2. Expelling heat directly to the CRAC units using sophisticated pressure sensors to control fan speed and exhaust hot air at an efficient rate.

By focusing on these two steps you can maintain an ideal temperature for your data center equipment. The combination of hot air containment and intelligent controlled fan speed creates a consistent climate controlled environment in the data center and within the cabinet rows.

Geist Cool is available for nearly all new and existing cabinet models. Geist developed a vast library of cabinet specific installation kits that include: cabinet tops, door blocking kits, and mounting hardware. If there is a new cabinet or row configuration, Geist's team of design engineers will deliver a solution.
Rack Based System

Geist's single rack intelligent containment configuration is ideal for high density cabinets. The single chimney system and sensors work exclusively to exhaust heat contained in the single rack. Racks installed with the system will maximize data center space while cooling critical equipment

Row Based System

The row based system allows multiple racks to share a single chimney in lower density environments. As row densities increase, additional chimneys and sensors can be added to maintain the appropriate temperature throughout the row of cabinets.

Scalable Capacity

System capacity automatically scales as loads are added or removed. Automated load sharing returns all heat directly to return air plenum. High density loads can be directly coupled for single cabinet isolation. Load sharing leads to lower cost per deployed kW, allowing all fans to run at energy efficient speeds. Optional placement of Geist cooling units avoid overhead obstructions such as cable trays

Load Sharing

Multiple systems work together to share cabinet loads. Operational redundancy increases as systems work in concert. In the event of utility failure, heat continues to be exhausted by the Geist cabinet cooling system unit using power provided by its PDU. Sophisticated temperature and pressure sensors control redundant fan speeds to exhaust hot air through the chimneys at the most efficient rate.

Automated Control

Automatic notification of system threshold breach via email or SNMP. Environmental conditions monitored and reported automatically.

IT intake air is stabilized within a few degrees of the supply air temperature at all points in the data center.

Efficient Management

Geist's Environet software aggregates total airflow load and automates the process defining requirements, allowing lowered airflow across the data center.

Cool Firmware

Call  1.877.902.2979 if you have questions about the firmware for Geist cooling products.

ActiveAir Firmware

Changes contained in version v3.8.7 (10/19/2015):
Note: Due to firmware structure changes it is not possible to load firmware older than v3.8.1 onto units that have been upgraded to v3.8.1 or newer.
Note: Units already running ActiveAir-branded firmware must be updated using the Geist ASU.

Change branding to Geist Cool ActiveAir. Added ability to set capacity set point via SNMP. Fixed SNMPv3 traps sent unencrypted.

R-Series v3 Firmware

Changes contained in version 3.15.2 (10/20/2015):
Note: Due to firmware structure changes it is not possible to load firmware older than v3.12.1 onto units that have been upgraded to v3.12.1 or newer.
Note: Geist firmware v3.x.y represents a major hardware change.
Note: Devices running firmware prior to v3.0.0 cannot be upgraded to this version.
Note: See below for the latest Geist v2.xx firmware.
Note: Due to changes in the measurement logging system updating to this firmware from versions prior to 3.4.0 will erase your log history. Please download and save your log history prior to updating if you wish to maintain it.
Note: Units with ODS or DPS-branded firmware must be updated using the Geist ASU.
Note: Devices updated from legacy IT Watchdogs firmware will report their SNMP data under the Geist enterprise and product ID once updated to this firmware. 17323.3 in any monitored OIDs will change to 21239.2. Please make sure your SNMP monitoring software's configuration is updated to reflect this change.

Allow manually setting fan speed to 0 on RAC10.
Allow internal temperature sensor on RAC10 to be ignored when external sensors are present.
Improved handling of unplugged remote sensors on RAC10.
Fixed SNMPv3 traps sent unencrypted.
Fixed RAC10 units losing fan configuration on reboot when set to Temperature Set Point mode.

Geist ASU

ActiveAir™ Intelligent Airflow Management FAQs

Q1: Can my existing passive cabinet containment be converted to the ActiveAir system?

Q2: Is an active rack containment system much more expensive than a passive one?

Q3: How much more power will I need to utilize an active system?

Q4: What trades are required for installation?

Q5: Do cabinets need to be arranged in a certain pattern?

Q6: Do I need special doors that aren’t vented for this system to work?

A1: Yes, we have conversion kits available for many existing systems, and can create a tailor made conversion kit as needed.

A2: No it’s not.  Very often, a single ActiveAir system can be used to exhaust heat from 2-3 cabinets at a time which provides a very competitive price to passive while giving you control and monitoring features that passive solutions can’t.

A3: An ActiveAir system only requires 200-300 watts per system, and therefore can utilize power provided by the A and B PDUs.

A4: The units are very simple to install and can be completed in a couple hours.  Since they plug into a standard receptacle and because they don’t effect the mechanical workings of HVAC systems generally no licensed tradesmen are required.

A5: One of the biggest benefits to ActiveAir is that it doesn’t require cabinet to be in a straight even row.  Each cabinet can be dealt with individually.  If the exhaust of one cabinet points to the intake of another we don’t care.  The hot air is captured from the server exhaust and handled properly.

A6: No, the conversion kit includes rear door blanking material that converts vented doors to non-vented requiring only a few minutes per door.
